Proverbs 20:3 reminds us that "Avoiding a fight is a mask of honor: only fools insist on quarreling."
In Jesus' time, He encountered numerous situations that could have escalated into conflict, but He consistently demonstrated a different approach. Jesus valued temperance, choosing self-control over impulsive reactions. He embraced tolerance, showing love and compassion even to those who opposed Him. Jesus practiced thoughtfulness, considering the feelings and perspectives of others. And ultimately, He was the prefect example of turning the other cheek, offering forgiveness and reconciliation instead of retaliation.
Today, tensions run high, and conflicts arise easy. So, when you are in this type of situation, take a deep breath, say a prayer and calm yourself down. Arguments are a tremendous waste of time and energy. There is really no rational reason to get involved.
Most serious conflicts evolve from our attempts to control others who will not accept our control. -William Glasser.
Suggestions to help defuse escalation of conflict:
Seek Understanding: Take the time to listen actively and show understanding of the concerns and grievances of others. Seek to understand their perspective, even if you may disagree.
Respond with Love: Responding with love and kindness can disarm hostility. Show respect and gentleness in your words and actions, showing the heart of Christ.
Practice Patience: Avoid rushing to judgment or responding impulsively. Instead, exercise patience and allow space for dialogue and understanding to take place.
Seek Mediation: In situations where tensions escalate, involving a neutral mediator can help facilitate peaceful resolutions. Consider seeking wise counsel or involving someone respected by both parties.
Let us remember that conflicts and disagreements are inevitable. However, how we handle them is a reflection of our faith and the transformative power of God's love in our lives.
Let us strive to be agents of peace, following the example of Jesus in our interactions with others. May our actions and words promote harmony, understanding, and reconciliation. By embracing the virtues of temperance, tolerance, thoughtfulness, and turning the other cheek, we can transform troubles into triumphs, both for ourselves and for those around us.
